Graphical gitches following recent security and software update on 20.10

Asked by Musa Attan

i have had this issue following a software and security update, i have a very amateur video just showing what it looks like, although i have noticed in other applications it is much worse then shown . I also noticed another question someone posted describing graphical glitches after an update at around the same time, although very little info was given so i cant be sure of that. I don't think this is screen tearing because i did not notice anything wrong after watching various screen tearing videos and the "tears" are in different places and move with images rather than staying stationary on the screen.

i was told that doing the following:
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

would fix it, unfortunately it did not, this is not an issue i have ever had before and literally appeared out of no where, my specs are:

I suggest that you follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure to collect diagnostic information.
In step 3 do not create a new question, but paste everything into this one which you have already created.

Your package management system seems to be misconfigured (see all the warning messages about InRelease)
I suggest to repair that first, because a broken package management systems can cause that the newest updates are not installed.

What is the output of the command

find /etc/apt -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;

ok, I see some errors:

1. remove all files in the sources.list.d subdirectory, because they are either empty anyhow, or not working because the related PPAs do not have software for Ubuntu groovy

sudo rm -v /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

2. Issue the command

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and in the editor that opens mage the following changes:

Replace all occurrences of "focal" by "groovy"
Make sure that there is a comment indicator in front of each occurrence of "deb-src" (change "deb-src" to "# deb-src" where this is not already in place)

In line 4 change the text
"groovy main restricted amd64 groovy/universe Packages"
into
"groovy main restricted"

In line 5 change the text
"groovy groovy/universe Packages amd64"
into
"groovy main restricted"

Then save the file and close the editor and finally issue the command

sudo apt update

and copy/paste the output that we can check whether the warnings and errors have disappeared.

I suggest that you run the troubleshooting procedure again. Maybe this helps finding the cause.

still having issues,
i am having weird flickering line near the activities tab and other places, not as pronounced but similar to [https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/jgql1y/plasma_519_fedora_33_kubuntu_2010_intense/], not sure but it might be related to this too [https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Fusion-Discussions/Ubuntu-Studio-and-Kubuntu-20-10-corrupted-graphics/m-p/2306757#M140494]

btw i didnt notice this thread got marked as answered... oops

quick update, although this does not solve the issue- i noticed a "fix". When logging in there is an option in the bottom right cog- clicking it opens a menu where you can choose "ubuntu" or "ubuntu with Wayland". I have no idea what these are and what is the difference between the 2 options but this graphical glitch doesn't seen to be there if i click the Wayland option. Hopefully this sheds some light onto the issue.

i still need to test to see if the issue is there with other applications when i choose Wayland but so far so good.

After doing some more testing the issue is still there with Wayland but slightly less prominent

link to someone else having an identical issue to me, they also provided some additional info into what caused this

So I upgraded to 21.04 just to get rid of this issue, unfortunately the issue still persists
