problems writing netbook-remix

Asked by John Wilson

I have downloaded ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img to a USB stick, checked the hashmarks and then tried to make a new bootable USB stick.
Image writer does not run whether the target is the same or a different USB stick.
The output looks like this:
Image: /media/disk-1/ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img
Target Device: SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro (/dev/sdc)
Unmounting all partitions of /dev/sdc:
Trying to unmount /dev/sdc...
/dev/sdc successfully unmounted
Am I doing something wrong?
Regards,
John

I would copy the img file to your hard drive if you have space, then write the image to your USB stick and, if you need the space, delete the image from your hard drive. I haven't examined the code for the image writer, but it may be the case that it expects the image to be on a hard drive rather than a USB stick. It certainly won't allow you to read the image from the same stick that you intend to install to - the USB stick would need to be formatted to take the install and thus needs unmounting before it can be formatted. As soon as that happens, you lose access to the image file....

I think you need to copy the iso image onto the hard-drive temporarily and then make the Usb stick bootable before putting the iso image back on the Usb stick.

I think what's gone wrong is that you've somehow managed to do things in a wrong order but hopefully that's not to difficult to put right ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
