Please open a terminal and type:
gconf-editor

Navigate to
/apps/nautilus/desktop/
option:
volumes_visible=false

In Ubuntu, partitions are automatically mounted when accessed. The same applies to USB devices that show up on your Desktop when inserted.

To remove the displayed item, right click on its icon and select "Unmount Volume" from the drop-down list. That will make the icon disappear.

You must always unmount a device when you no longer require it. This is especially important in the use of USB sticks to enable the completion of any data transfer.
