Ubuntu packages - website for tracking, some questions

Asked by Piotr

Dear Ubuntu Community,

I would like to know why this website for tracking is not active and it is outdated? --> https://packages.ubuntu.com

For example is difference in changelogs for ubuntu-keyring package:

1) Launchpad - https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+source/ubuntu-keyring/+changelog
2) Ubuntu Packages - http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/u/ubuntu-keyring/ubuntu-keyring_2018.09.18.1~18.04.0/changelog

Why on Ubuntu Packages I can't see new version for some packages? I want to know if I should install ubuntu-keyring (2018.09.18.1~18.04.2)? Or maybe the newest version is ubuntu-keyring (2018.09.18.1~18.04.0) like on Ubuntu packages website?
Why I asked you? Because this is strange that Launchpad is more update than packages.ubuntu.com. Can you explain me why it is work now that?

Yours faithfully,
Piotr

I tried verifying your statement and I do not see the same results.

Currently https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic-updates/ubuntu-keyring shows version 2018.09.18.1~18.04.2 as version for bionic-updates, and the changelog link points to http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/u/ubuntu-keyring/ubuntu-keyring_2018.09.18.1~18.04.2/changelog

I guess that this was just a timing issue. The packages.ubuntu.com website is not updated in real-time, but only in regular intervals.

Publication date of version 2018.09.18.1~18.04.2 was on 2021-03-31 16:03:22 UTC, this is approximately five hours ago.

Apparently you looked at the packages web page when the publication on launchpad had already happened, but the update on the packages website had not yet been done.

Apart from such differences between launchpad and the packages.ubuntu.com web site, you also have to be aware that replication from the central archives.ubuntu.com server to the local mirrors worldwide also does not happen instantly, but only several times a day. There might be a short time window between the time when a new version is announced on launchpad, and its availability on your local mirror server.
