Partition allocated to ubantu shows as "unallocated" in window disk management

Asked by sanket kumar

I recently installed ubantu 20.04 and allocated 50gb and ubantu is all working fine but when I checked windows disk manager, it shows the 50gb allocated to ubantu as "unallocated". Will it cause any problems? If yes how to solve this

Windows does not understand Ext4 file systems. It can't understand very many file systems at all really so it will show weirdly in Windows. If Ubuntu is OK then I wouldn't worry about what Windows says.

If you look at the file systems in Ubuntu is all the space allocated and running as expected? If so then you'll not have any issues

Hi Sanket, Windows usually can only read very few partition types, and will definitely not be able to discover/use any Linux partitions such as ext3/4, xfs, btrfs. Having the partition show up as Unallocated in Windows will not cause you any problems, as long as you remember that it is actually being used, and in the future won't try to create one using a Windows partitioning tool.

If you're looking to have a partition accessible both from Windows and Ubuntu to share files for example, you could create an NTFS partition which both operating systems will be able to use to access files from.

Can you help with this problem?
