issue with external monitor cant mirror or join displays anymore

My external monitor was working fine on latest version of Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

But today the external screen works during log in screen (purple screen) but after log in the 2nd monitor goes black and I cannot get it going. When i try to join display or mirror I get a message cant find hdmi...

But if I close my lid of my laptop the external monitor starts working.

so I am very confused

I am also getting lots of flickering like my dock flashes and closes menus I am in like show applications

If I use the short cut on my laptop to switch 1 display to the external monitor it works.

So I can have main display on external monitor but laptop goes blank, but again if i choose join displays it does not work

Does the system have a make and model?
Do you have the latest BIOS?

Thank you I changed cables then it worked.. No idea why as old one was fine few mins befire
