Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system requirements

Asked by Gerad Jeyaseelan on 2021-03-17

I wish to know what are the system hardware requirements(minimum and recommended) for the upcoming LTS version of Ubuntu 22.04. I'm a newbie to linux and my guess is someone must be working on a cutting edge desktop to develop code for all the features the new hardware configuration presents. Any reply from engineers behind the said version would be greatly appreciated. I'm using an i3 processor with 8 GB RAM and 500 GB HDD. I just wish not to upgrade my hardware for another 15 years or so.

Work on Ubuntu 22.04 has not been started at all. Currently there ist the last steps of development for Ubuntu 21.04 (to be published in five weeks' time). Then there will be work done on Ubuntu 21.10 (for publication in October), and Ubuntu 22.04 will follow only afterwards.
You cannot expect that anybody can predict the minimum requirements for an operating system whose development has not started yet.

I am quite sure that your hardware will be sufficient to run also the coming Ubuntu releases. It is just a matter of speed. Maybe you will no more be satisfied with the performance of your system in some distant future. You then still have the possibility to switch to a light-weight variant of Ubuntu (Lubuntu or Xubuntu).

A prediction over a period of 15 years is impossible. Maybe we will all use quantum computing by then, requiring completely different hardware - who knows? I think that 15 years ago nobody expected that nowadays we all are running 64bit and not 32bit systems any more.
