Please help me with MB16AC (Portable Monitor)

Asked by Jacob Wagner

Hello Everyone,

I appreciate any help I can get. I've been Googling and trying to get my ASUS MB16AC portable monitor to work for several hours. I warn you that I am new to Ubuntu. Also, I am not an expert with computer hardware, but I do have some knowledge.

My MSI laptop:

GeForce GTX 1650 4 GB GDDR5
1 x Mini DisplayPort 1 x HDMI (4K @ 30Hz)
1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
3 x USB 3.2 Gen 1

What I've done:

Installed the DisplayLink driver from the ASUS site
Found DisplayLink adapter on ID 17e9:4374
Updated the package lists
Installed the packages
Tried to install an open source Nvidia driver but received an error (I don't know if there's already installed - I'm a super beginner)

Once I got to the Nouveau driver, I stopped because I don't know what I'm doing.

The MB16AC continually says the device doesn't support DB Alt Mode.

Here is what I have:

For diagnostic purposes please open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and issue the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo lshw -C display
dpkg -l | grep nvidia
xrandr -q

then select all output and paste it into your question document.

What is now the problem, what is your aim?
Do you want two monitors at the same time?
Or do you want to run specific applications with the nvidia adapter instead of the intel built-in one?
Or ... ?

Can I run two monitors at the same time with the portable monitor serving as an extension of the desktop? Ideally, I want to perform the same function as Windows provides, where there is a continuity between the two monitors and I can drag apps freely across them.

Thanks for your help.

Jacob

Is there a function key combo (e.g. Fn-F5) on your system to switch between internal monitor / external monitor / both?

I have Fn-F2 for that. I tried it, but nothing.

I figured it out. Thanks. I believe the wrong Nvidia drivers were installed.
