Asked by John Seddon

Icon on tool-bar for Simple-Scan recognizes my printer and says 'ready to scan' but when clicked to scan it says 'failure to connect'.

What make and model is the scanner/printer?
How is it connected to the computer?
Which Ubuntu release are you running?
What output do you receive for diagnostic commands like
sane-find-scanner
scanimage -L

Manfred,
Printer/Scanner is an HP Envy 4500 which is connected to the computer
through a USB type plug.I am running Version 20.04 just recently
installed.Scanimage-L output says 'command not found' and no backend
manpage.Sane-find-scanner says 'no SCSI scanners found' and 'make sure you
have loaded a kernel SCSI licence for SCSI adapter'.It also says
'insufficient permissions and found USB scanner at lib usb 001:003'.Not
sure what it means or how to go forward.

Command 'isusb' not found, did you mean:

command 'lsusb' from deb usbutils (1:012-2)

Try: sudo apt install <deb name>

$ isb-release-crid: command not found # No SCSI scanners found. If you

Copy/paste works in both directions.
Why don't you mark a line from the commands, copy it and then paste it into the command line window with the right mouse button and selecting "paste" from the pop-up?

I'm confused. On the terminal I find uname and it says 'command not found'
and there are 8 parameters including kernel name, etc.Since I don't know the
kernel name how do I go about finding it and then giving the terminal this
information and permission.I can use copy/paste to get it there. My learning
curve must be very steep.

The terminal says "command not found", because you mistyped the command.

Open your web browser and a terminal window besides each other.
In the web browser open the page https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/695850 and scroll down, almost to the end until you see this list of commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
lsusb
groups
sane-find-scanner
sudo sane-find-scanner
scanimage -L

Mark the first command with pressed mouse button, such that it is shown in reverse color.
Press the right mouse button, and in the pop-up window that is shown do a left click on "copy".
Now do a right click in the terminal window, and in the pop-up window that is shown do a left click on "paste", press the enter key.
Now go back to the web browser and mark the second command, and repeat the steps, etc.

Finally use the terminal window's menu entries "edit - select all" and "edit - copy" and finally paste everything into the "Message:" box of the question document and press the "I still need an answer" button.

Well done, this is the output that we wanted to see.

If you now open a terminal window and issue the command

hp-scan -i

what happens?

Further to my last response,I checked on the HP software website, entered
the model of my printer and got the response "HP does not support Envy in
Linux so advise to go to another website".Does this mean there is a
work-around?
