?

Manfred,
When I do that it says "ready to scan" and the printer name. When I clik on
SCAN it says "failed to scan" and "unable to connect".The printer prints
but will not scan a document and therefore will not print.

This is now a different problem.

I want to stick to the first problem - "can't locate Simple Scan"

Which variant of Ubuntu are you running?
Do you have an icon bar at the left screen border that shows an icon for each running program?

Manfred,
Yes but they only indicate Firefox,Thunderbird, files and libre office. I'm
using 20.04(newly installed) and previous versions had a right hand corner
drop down with categories for any specific task but nothing on this
version.

Do the same as before, start simple-scan from a terminal window. When it is running, then you should see a new icon on the left hand side for simple-scan. Click on that icon with the right mouse button and select "add to favorites". Then it should stay there, even if not running.

Manfred,
The icon is now in the left hand tool-bar and it finds my printer but I
clik SCAN and it still says "unable to connect".

Manfred
You're right. The issue was not being able to locate the icon in the tool-bar and you solved that issue.I'll enter a new question to deal with it's non-function.
Thanks
John
