It could be that it is locked by another application.
What is the output of lsof /media/cdrom0 ?

Anything of relevance in dmesg?
Is it shown as recognised by udev (for instance ls -l /sys/block/scd0/)?
Check also that the link in /sys/block/scd0/ points to the right device.

If it's a music cd, like CD-audio , you can check if gnome-cd can reproduce it. If you ear strange noise, the cd-drive lens can be dirty, or simply, the drive has die.

Other things, probe to mount manually a normal data CD,
sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

Hello !

Bug #10906 as been solved yet, so it can't be that (and it was a shtdown/reboot problem on LiveCD, nothing to do with you problem) ...

Can you check on another machine that your drive is still healthy ? If you have some Windows in dual boot, is the problem also present there ?

Regards,
Benoît

hi,
I might have some more and interesting infos on this subject for you. I encountered the same problem and posted about already here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2706945#post2706945

This is a linux kernel bug. Maybe already fixed in a newer version than the one available with ubuntu.

/robert
