Screen not shutting off when locked under Focal

Asked by Jaime Cruz

All related questions appear to be for much older versions of Ubuntu. Not sure if this is hardware related, or software related as I have a new desktop since installing Focal. I know this was not a problem on my old desktop running Bionic.

In Gnome settings, I have the system set to "lock" after 15 minutes of inactivity, and I have the screen set to shut down when locked. However, often when coming back from an hour long lunch, the screen is still open to the last application I had running. In addition, if I manually lock the screen, it does not shut down, but will display the lock screen all night long.

Running a completely up to date version of Focal Fossa 20.04.2 (last ran the updater this morning but I run it every morning before I start working). All open-source video and sound drivers; nothing proprietary installed.

Any ideas?

Hello Jaime,

Pleas go to Settings -> Privacy -> Screen Lock
Check whether you have the "Automatic Screen Lock" on (that is the button pushed to the right).

I hope this was the solution.
If not pleas write again.

Stay safe, stay Linux.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T420 with the same version of Ubuntu at the same maintenance level. The difference is the laptop is 100% Intel, whereas the desktop is AMD and Radeon. The laptop correctly shuts off the display if it has been sitting long enough. I compared the settings between the two systems, both the "Power" and "Privacy" settings and they are identical. "Automatic Screen Lock" is turned on both systems, too.

I'm going to close this problem because it seems to have resolved itself. Not sure what changed beyond just keeping the system as up to date as possible but the screen is now shutting down regularly after I lock the system.

I discovered the problem! It's Steam! If I play "Team Fortress 2" then after the game ends the screen never locks or turns off despite any settings I may have set (and when I check the settings, they actually haven't changed). So Steam is doing "something" that turns off the automatic screen lock. Even if I manually lock the screen, the monitor never shuts off.

After a reboot, everything returns to normal but once I play "Team Fortress 2" it stops working again. Ideas?
