us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com unresolvable with IPv6

Asked by Michael Juliano on 2021-02-17

This isn't really a question, but archive.ubuntu.com can be resolved to an IPv6 address while us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com cannot. This forces users of the AWS Quick Start Ubuntu image who wish to use IPv6 with an egress-only IPv6 gateway instead of a NAT gateway and EIP, to modify the apt repository before they can receive updates. I have not checked the other ec2 subdomains, so it's worth double-checking that all of them can resolve to IPv6 addresses. I got the strong hint that I should avoid filing a bug unless absolutely certain, so I'm putting this here for now.

Placing the following in user-data will circumvent this problem until the ec2 mirrors are resolvable to IPv6 addresses:

#cloud-config
apt:
  preserve_sources_list: false
  primary:
    - arches:
        - amd64
      uri: "http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu"

Can you help with this problem?
