Updating xr-usb-serial driver to latest version

Asked by AndyC

As far as I can tell, the latest version of the xr-usb-serial driver (https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/unstable/tree/ubuntu/xr-usb-serial/README.txt) in Ubuntu is 1A, whereas the manufacturer released version is 1C (https://www.maxlinear.com/support/design-tools/software-drivers). Could it updated to the latest version? Ideally backported to bionic as well.

Maxlinear is mostly microsoft not much on Linux.
Could not look it up on the Debian or Ubuntu Repository. What is the actual name of the program file?

Yeah the code I linked in the Ubuntu tree has the driver version dated 1/9/2015, version 1A. The manufacturer version at https://www.maxlinear.com/support/design-tools/software-drivers (USB UART, Linux 3.6.x and newer) is dated 2017/1/11, version 1C, and has a couple of important fixes. I wasn't sure whether to file a bug for the update or not, so I asked the question on here.

The kernel module xr_usb_serial_common.ko in Ubuntu is not provided by the official kernel (at least not up to version 5.10.0), but it is built with source that is included in the kernel during the Ubuntu build process.

If you see the need to upgrade that software, then please create a bug report for requesting this.

I assume that the target for reporting the bug is the "linux" kernel package.
Please also add a good description what the improvements in the new version are.

Can you help with this problem?
