Ubuntu

if I use upgrade manager to upgrade from 8.10 64 bit to 9.04 - will it pick up the 64bit version? The process does not ask which version wil it upgrade and I would lIke to stay with the 64bit

Also, if this does not wrok - if I upgrade maualy will it preserve my file system and all my work?

If you have installed the 64 bit version of ubuntu (amd64) then all your upgrades will be 64 bit also
