How do I trigger an upgrade from 8.04 to higher levels? My Update Manager just says it is up-to-date. When I read the manuals it says updates (to Jaunty) shoudl happen automatically.

Asked by Johnshubu

I have 8.04 - it just took half an hour updating via Update Manager and still reports it is 8.04. It works moderately well, apart from lack of wireless access and complete freezes (requiring reboot) about every 20 minutes. I thought as a final attempt to use Ubuntu as an alternative operating system I should try the latest version, but I can't find any information about how to do an upgrade other than start from scratch.

Doi the following:

1: Click System > Administration > Software Sources
2: Click the tab Updates

What is listed in the section Release upgrade? Change this entry and start the Update Manager. You should get an offer to install a new release in the Update Manager.

Hope it helps.

Hi,

Hardy Heron (8.04) is a LTS (LongTermSupport) release and by default LTS's upgrade to the next LTS which are released every two years, the next is 10.04 (in April 2010)

I you want to upgrade to the next release even if it's not an LTS then go to Release upgrade and select "Normal releases"

You have to install 8.10 before you can install 9.04.

What I actually wrote was 'Brilliant! Thanks Peter, Koen, just what I needed.' But I made the mistake of clicking on the 'that solved my problem' button and it came out more bland. Your very rapid help is much appreciated thanks
