using Wine

Asked by Dave Keyser

How to employ Wine in running a Windows program or application.
I just need simple steps on how to get it started.
the current program of interest is a computer program APL (a programming language)
the specific one I use is NARS2000
e g Do I start up Wine and then open NARS2000?
OR WHAT intermediate or initial commands and path must I perform to get a Windows app to work in Ubuntu 18?
Thanks for the help
Dave

If you have wine already installed on your system, then the only thing you have to do is:
download the latest version of NARS2000, unzip it, and run it as

wine NARS2000.exe

see the last paragraph in http://wiki.nars2000.org/index.php/Platforms

Dear Bernard,

I am still mostly a novitiate in using the terminal.  I seem to have
installed 'playonlinux'--at least its icon responds and is in the
Applications list on my ubuntu 18.  But then in trying to install
NARS2000-0.5.14.11.exe, I keep running into cul de sacs. I can't seem to
get to this windows exe program for 'PlayOnLinux' to install and run
it?  This later Wine program is the one recommended in the wine users'
manual you sent to me below.

"/home/dave/home/downloads/NARS2000-0.5.14.11.exe: No such file or directory"

You mistyped the file name or the directory name.

Try the command

wine Downloads/NARS2000-0.5.14.11.exe

I was unsuccessful at first try; but on the second follow-up to my
questions, Manfred Hampl noticed the error in my typed command at the
terminal --which when I watched the error messages spewing from the
terminal I did not see the duplication ( which may have been an auto
default) in the command --it went so fast.  He then gave me the correct
command to use to install APL on my ubuntu hard drive, and it was
successful.  An initial test of the program showed that it was operating
as designed, which brought me joy and for which I thank him very much.
Please convey my thanks to him.
