Screen tearing on Multiple Steam games in multi monitor settings

Asked by David Tantono

Hi
I just want to give feedback for the Ubuntu 20.10 that there is a screen tearing problem if I use multiple monitor settings when I played native Steam games (Xcom, civilization VI etc) on Linux ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla). My primary monitor use resolution 1920x1080 and the other two monitors resolution are 3840x2160 (But, I downsize it to 1920x1080). So, I suspect the screen tearing is happening because of the GPU driver ( I Use nvidia closed source driver 455) or the kernel itself because the problem affects multiple games from different developers and on Windows 10 the problem is not happening. Could you investigate this problem?

This may help solve the screen tearing.
https://medium.com/@anirudha/how-to-fix-screen-tearing-of-linux-ubuntu-20-04-for-nvidia-graphics-card-gtx-980ti-f0c707deff64
https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/prevent-screen-tearing-on-linux/
Refer to Gnome Shell fix. Change your session from X org to Wayland could make a difference also.

Hi
Thanks for your advice and here are my outputs:
1. I am trying to modifying the nvidia x server settings. But it does not
work
2. I am trying to remove the second and third monitors (all of them have
3840x2160 resolution) and run the game with the single monitor (1920x1080
resolution). this one works. But, I trying to play the same game
with Windows 10 and same PC with same multiple monitor settings. Windows
does not have any problem. So, I suspect this is not the app issue and I
suspect this one related to the ubuntu or the driver itself.
3.I am trying to switch from Xorg to Wayland follow this website (
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-20-04-desktop).
But, I think this article is for Ubuntu 20.04 and I am using Ubuntu 20.10
which is quite different. Is there any changes from the previous version?
or do you have other ideas?
4. You can see my screenshots for this issue
Please advise

Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.10 are almost identical when it comes to video, be sure to log out and back in again.
Settings -> Display -> Turn on Fractional Scaling - may make a different with multiple monitors.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1240813/wayland-in-ubuntu-20-04-intelgpu
If you use the proprietary nvidia driver use X11 Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers Tab

Hi
Thanks for your reply and here is my output:
1. I tried to do fractional scaling in the settings and it does not work
2. I tried to switch my driver version in the additional driver tab. But,
it does not work and this method causes a new problem that all of my GNOME
shell extensions are disabled without any reason and I cannot reinstall or
enabled it back from the browser as usual
3. The problem only occurred with native Linux supported games from the
developer. But, the Windows game from Steam Proton (steam Play) does not
have this issue
4. According to the website (
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-20-04-desktop).
in the login screen there should be gear on the lower right of the screen
which is identical to Ubuntu 20.04 and I cannot find it. Any Ideas?
Please advise

Hi
For session changing from Xorg to Wayland, I know I have automatic login
enabled from the settings and I need to disable it first. So, the desired
menu can be found. But, the gear icon on the lower right side of the screen
for switching the session from xorg to Wayland can't be found. Is there any
other method?

You may want to consider an alternative, downloading a different driver.
Before you attempt to install a different Nvidia driver completely remove the driver you have currently.
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:mamarley/nvidia
sudo ppa-purge ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo reboot
Be sure to have a full understanding of the readme installation and config manual before you start.

Hi
Thanks for your reply and here is my output:
1. I typed sudo edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and it does not work. So, I
typed sudo nano edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf instead and I got the right
command
2. I delete comment symbol To- WaylandEnable=False and I rebooted it and
then I typed echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. The result is X11
3. I am trying to guess by changed it to WaylandEnable=True and then I
typed echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. The result is X11
Do you have any ideas? and please advise

The command is sudoedit /etc....... Their is no space between sudo and edit.. If you prefer sudo nano edit /etc... Your back on X11.
That is what you wanted.

1. I typed sudoedit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf without space as you requested

2. About purging PPA from official Ubuntu team, that means I will not get a
further update about the driver. Is that so?
Please advise

True, That would only be needed if you decided to change to the Nvidia proprietary driver. Otherwise leave as is using the Nouveau opensource driver. https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-20-10-groovy-gorilla-linux

1. I tried the Nouveau before and the screen tearing is affecting the whole
system. So, it is no good
2. About the link you send to me (
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-20-10-groovy-gorilla-linux).
there is a specific PPA for beta drivers and Nvidia driver from the Nvidia
website. My question is: what is the difference between these two methods
and the official Nvidia PPA driver from Ubuntu?
Please advise

A Beta Driver is one that is still in developmental stages and not yet approved to be released. A PPA is an install at your own risk, Not approved by Ubuntu. A driver from Nvidia.com is a Propitiatory Signed Driver By Nvida.

ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa you mentioned beforebecause I don't add this PPA
intentionally and it is installed by default. This one is from ubuntu. Is
that so?

That is only to completely remove a video driver so a different type of [proprietary] driver can be installed in its place.
[[If you are changing drivers within Ubuntu software & updates you will not need to use that method.]]
That is only if your are installing a driver from Nvidia.com website.

Hi
I got the solution by reimaged my distro from Ubuntu 20.10 to 20.04 LTS.
Honestly, I found that this is surprising that updated OS have a bug like
this. Is LTS version more reliable? and can you pass my feedback to the
development team to fix this issue especially for the upcoming Ubuntu 21.04
in April?
