Is there a reason you are using 18.04 instead of 20.04 on such recent hardware?

Your is a dual GPU Intel/Nvidia "Optimus" laptop which greatly benefits from latest Xserver to make switching back and forth easier.

Yes, I use Reaper a lot and it bugs on 20.04

My goal is more music than graphics.

REAPER releases frequent updates. Have you tried the latest version (6.19)?

Anyway, if you want Ubuntu 18.04 to run well on such new hardware, you're going to need a newer kernel ( https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Comet-Lake-Linux-5.2 )

Start here:
sudo update-pciids
sudo apt-get install linux-lowlatency-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04

Now, reboot and check if the graphics are working better:
glxinfo -B

Note that if you're not interested in high performance graphics, then you probably do not want to use the Nvidia GPU. Stick with the integrated Intel GPU if it's working. If you're interested in using the Nvidia card, there are more steps: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2454399&p=14004415#post14004415

You guys know what you re talking about ! Now I got a normal screen. You can't imagine how hard it is to work with 800x600 screen !

I've had a look on the https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2454399&page=2&p=14004415#post14004415

But should I have to specify for each program if I want it to use the nividia gpu ?

"But should I have to specify for each program if I want it to use the nividia gpu ?"

Well, that's how 'ondemand' mode works on Linux. Unfortunately, there is no automatic load-based switching like with Windows.

So, your choices are:

1. Run everything on the Intel GPU (sudo prime-select intel) - Best battery life, least power consumption, least heat, least fan noise.
Performance should be sufficient for most tasks except 3D-demanding games/programing. You may not be able to use external video output if it is connected to the Nvidia GPU.

2. Run everything on the Nvidia GPU (sudo prime-select nvidia) - Not a good idea unless you are always plugged into AC and your laptop is well-cooled. This may cause CPU thermal throttling in thinner chassis.

3. Use ondemand (sudo prime-select ondemand): Only run programs on the Nvidia GPU that need it. Most users probably want to be using this.

I guess 1 is the default ? I don't have nothing to do for that.

A little thing I noticed: I usually use automatic panel hide. It works in all sides except the right one that I use. That was workin fine under Ubuntu 19.10, 20.04 and Debian 10. Could that be related to the driver ?

"I guess 1 is the default ?"

I don't own an Optimus laptop, so I couldn't tell you. If you want to see what mode you're currently using:
sudo prime-select query ('query' may not need sudo permissions. I forget.)

And if you want to try different modes, use prime-select (intel | nvidia | ondemand) as shown above. I don't know what else to tell you.

"It works in all sides except the right one that I use. That was working fine under Ubuntu 19.10, 20.04 and Debian 10. Could that be related to the driver?"

I guess it could. But if the same problem happens in nvidia and intel/ondemand mode, then I think it's unlikely a driver issue.
I don't use GNOME, so I don't know what you're talking about exactly. You should probably make a new thread for that...

Thanks a milion, Daniel, for your clear and precise support. I had opened 3 other discuss on other different forums without any usuable answer for weeks and you solved my question in the day.

I've put a link to that thread on the 3 other forums.

I'll open another thread for the other question
