decrease boot time for ubuntu 20.04

Asked by Steve Ogborne

I am trying 20.04. I presently use mint 19.2. I like 20.04 but it takes much longer to boot than mint 19. Mint 19 boots in 43 seconds while 20.04 takes 1 minute 30 seconds. How can I speed up the boot process? Thanks

On Ubuntu 20.04 you can reduce the time by choosing the programs that you want to startup at boot time. Activities -> type: Startup -> Startup Applications Preferences Add or Remove from the startup list.

Bernard, thanks for your reply. I have done as you suggested, but boot time only decreased by 5 seconds. What seems to take forever is the "clean screen" that comes on at the beginning of the boot process. Can that be eliminated?

In case you mean disk check, if you're seeing that on every boot, that's not normal. Check the system is shutting down cleanly and perhaps check your HDD in case the hardware is failing.

Changing to a SSD will of course offer a dramatic boot time improvement.
