Windows 98 is too old to run Wubi, and your system specs wouldnt support it well enough on any newer versions of Windows.

From the Wubi website:

Requirements

Memory 256 MB memory

Harddisk Space 5 GB harddisk space

Operating System Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista

-----
It should run in Windows 98, and the Xubuntu variant could possibly run on the hardware.

Xubuntu is excellent for this type of machine. It's almost identical to Ubuntu except it's blue and has slightly different packages for some things. Xubuntu is even good for ultra-top-end machines that want to work faster. It has all the fancy desktop effects like the cube and firewriting etc :)

I would be tempted to go for a smaller and lighter distro on this machine though, just for improved speed and stuff ;) Trying to run a fully featured OS on a min-spec machine is much less than sub-optimal but there are plenty of options, such as Wolvix

Good luck and regards from

It's often worth posting a question in here before going off to find answers elsewhere. If you find the answer then you can always post it back here and that helps people in the future when they look through our "Solved Answers" database ;)

Hmmm, it would be better to avoid the Wubi entirely and install Xubuntu properly, that would make it faster and lighter on resources. Also it would be more stable and robust because it would rely on linux systems rather than Windows ones ;)

Brilliant!! Nicely done :))
Please can you mark this question as Solved, if it is. But please don't click the button at the bottom of this message, that would just confuse the "Solved Answers" database.

Thanks and regards from
