Desktop Environment Issue

Asked by Muhammad Asraf Ahmed Imon

I had installed xfce DE in ubuntu 20.04 LTS which has gnome DE. While installing xfce I had selected it as my default DE. But, after a week I have uninstalled xfce DE, now my laptop is not loading anything and it is showing a blank screen. How can I solve this issue?
Please help me.

Could drop to CLI, install XFCE

sudo apt install xfce4

Log in, change default DE and then remove XFCE

Do you use autologin? If so, then chnage the desktop session for the autologin in the configuration in the DM (LightDM is the default in Ubuntu as far as I know).

Use root recovery console from GRUB. You will need to run:

mount -o remount, rw /

Do you use autologin? If you change the default autologin session it'll probably fix it better and easier. Still drop to root recovery though to modify the LightDM configuration

Today I have opened my laptop, suddenly I got a black screen terminal, where I have to use my username and then password to login. Then I have installed xfce again and make it default. Now my laptop is normal like before.
The problem is solved.
But I have a lot of time to get a terminal, but I have not get anything like that. What was that? I just pressed esc for a long time. Before it I always get grub menu. Can you say what was it?
