How to start reading how Ubuntu works . I want to contribute but 1st I need to understand it's working.

I would like to contribute to linux. But I have to 1st understand how and where to start reading the code . There are many folders . When I open a folder I find myself in a situation where I have to open another folder with double the folders . Where to start for understanding??

Please if possible tell also an example program like shutdown code is located in this file . Terminal code is in this file
