20.04LTS software centre won't launch

Asked by Peter Jordan

My wife recently upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04LTS via a software centre upgrade. All seems fine except that if you now click on software centre it tries to launch but fails. It is clearly listed in the installed apps list as being there.
How do I correct this problem or How do I remove and re install it given I have no access to the software centre to do so.
I do have 20.04 on a usb stick which I used for installation on my own PC

If you run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade

Does it run OK?

Hi Andrew,

I ran those commands and 5 packages were upgraded. All three commands
appeared to run okay but the problem remains the same.

You can install the Software Center in 20.04 by using

sudo apt install gnome-software

It may work.

Thanks for that Michael it has worked. I think I now have software
centre installed twice but that is okay. The interesting point here is
that when I installed  the software center with the command you kindly
gave me. It installed with a completely different software icon.
Originally an orange briefcase icon now an additional pale white and
blue satchel icon. but it works and that's what matters.

Many thanks again.
