Kubuntu never offers to upgrade versions

Asked by LanceHaverkamp

RE Kubuntu:

We used to get notified that a new release was available, and were politely asked if we would like to upgrade. I haven't seen that in a long time--like years. Did someone decide to stop that? Are we now forced to manually start a release upgrade from the command line? Is Discover supposed to handle that?

I know I can manually start an upgrade, that's not what I'm asking; and yes, I have preferred "Normal" releases, not LTS. I'm trying to learn if a KDE release upgrader has gone missing. I've already asked this in both the Kubuntu & Ask-Ubuntu forums, never having received a knowledgeable reply. No answer at all from the Kubuntu forums; and every Ask-Ubuntu reply is something like "It works in my GTK version."

Still using Kubuntu 20.04, waiting to be offered an upgrade.
Thanks,
Lance

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GroovyUpgrades/Kubuntu
Information you probably already know.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu
In the updates tab of Repositories: Notify me of a new Ubuntu version: Drop down box has: LTS or any newer version.
That is where you change the option for any newer version to have notifications for an upgrade.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu
For Kubuntu it is the updates tab similar to what is above.

Already have all that stuff set, but the system's still not saying there's a new version available.
"any newer version" is not an option in Kubuntu, the terminology here is "Normal Releases," but I think the intent is the same. The only other options are LTS, or Never.

If you boot to the ISO of Groovy you will be able to upgrade that way. I wouldn't suggest jumping from an LTS release to a non-LTS release but it's totally possible.

I've got Kubuntu on 3 machines, none are offering to upgrade:

* My everyday work desktop, which has lots of added programs
* An old laptop, that's nearly stock Kubuntu.
* A dual booting low-end gaming box, which mostly runs Windows.

Not one of these has ever mentioned that 20.10 has released.

I suspect that the upgrade-notifier in Kubuntu has been broken for a while. If anyone wants to test this; install Kubuntu 20.04, set the notification to normal releases, and see if you ever get a notification.

Hmmm that's very interesting, Bernard Stafford (bernard010). With that long set of instructions being in the official documentation, I have to wonder if that's Kubuntu's way of saying "Upgrade notifications won't happen, you're not going to get offered a convenient one-click way to begin the upgrade process, like you are with a Gnome-based Ubuntu." If that's the case, I'll consider this a defect, and file a bug-report; because years ago, notification worked. Thanks for the hint!

Can you help with this problem?
