Monitor doesn't work at current start up. But does in Live session

Asked by Alberto

Hello Techies,
here is my installation:
Xubuntu 18.04.5 32bits, constantly updated (running on a 64bits machine, though).
I'm writing from a Live session now, as at start up my monitor does not work: after boot tests, when it should be time to show graphics it gets completely blank and a cursor blinks in the upper left corner.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 is fine, the terminal works and commands can be executed, but striking Ctrl+Alt+F8 to get back to the graphic interface the blinking cursor appears once again, as above.
The same monitor works properly if I run a Live session, as I'm doing now.
How can I help you helping me to fix this issue?
I thank you in advance.
Alberto

Is the OS fully updated?
Make sure you have the latest BIOS too

Well Andrew, I updated the OS up to when the monitor worked properly, so Wednesday 4th.
Yesterday, in terminal, the system displayed that updates are available, but I don't know how to install them from cli. How can I install them?

More: how can I get the latest BIOS for my HP machine?
Thanks
Alberto

Run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt clean
sudo reboot

Should do it

Hello...
So:
sudo apt update, done
sudo apt upgrade, done
sudo apt dist-upgrade, (zero) done
sudo apt clean, done

The following message was displayed (it had been displayed since the end of September):
"Sorry, no more upgrades for this system.
There will not be any further Ubuntu release for this system's 'i386' architecture. Updates for Ubuntu 18.04 will continue until April 2023."

reboot, done.

Nothing changed...

I guess getting and installing a new BIOS from Live (the only way I can run my system, now) is a bit difficult.
(More, it would be the first time I perform it.)
What do you think?
Thanks

Hello Andrew.
I can add some information, though...!
A few days before this issue I notice that the text lines displayed during startup (with green OKs) were much more, and some of the lowest of them dealt with monitor.
But as they were displayed for less than a second I couldn't read more.
I've been trying and pausing boot (right of F12 key) in order to read them but I couldn't.
I wonder whether there is a way to pause boot executing in order to read these lines.
Do you think reading them could help?
Thanks

Hello Andrew,
some must have happened, keeping on updating and upgrading according to your suggestion on nov. 7th. Now the monitor has recovered and everything seems ok, no more Live sessions to make it work.
Maybe my system didn't like some updates and upgrades from nov. 5th to today, or there was something wrong in them that now has been fixed.

I did not update the BIOS, though, but I'm going to.
I hope you'll read this note.
Thanks
