vtund not working properly

Asked by James Finnall

Just upgraded to 20.04 LTS from 18.04 LTS and now vtund does not work correctly. Log file indicates it is unable to fork and that is consistent with what I am seeing at the command line.

The command does not terminate and no network interface is available.
The device tun0 does exist if I use ifconfig -a but not configured.

So at present I run the command manually and use the "&" on the end of the command and then run

ifconfig tun0 192.168.15.46 pointopoint 192.168.15.45

manually to configure the device. I leave the terminal window open in the background.

This was working correctly before under 18.04 without any issues.

I have used apt-get to remove and reinstall 3.0.4-2 without any success.
I have also reworked the vtund.conf file without any success.
From the history on a google search it appears this happened last year in 2019 and was supposed to be fixed in 3.0.4-2.
The date on vtund executable is Nov 10, 2019.

So is another library missing or is the program still broken?

Thank you for your consideration,
James

If you use nohup it will let you close the terminal but if the process goes zombie you'll need to reboot

I think I need an actual resolution to the problem with vtund failing to fork and finish properly. It has for many years and so it should now.

https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/vtun
This list the package dependencies. Check to see if you have all of them.
Thanks

Thank you for providing the quick link. All of the listed dependencies are installed as listed. Or at least they are reported to be installed. The system was just upgraded to 20.04 so a bug anywhere could make for a difficult problem to track down. However, 20.04 has been out for over 6 months so I doubt I would be the first to stumble on a problem. Also, since the vpn connection does actually work and that would reduce the possibility of a dependency further. I would expect more of a seg fault at failure.

Maybe the same problem as described in Bug #1881522

I am unable to determine if the bug report is the same. I am attempting to run as a client, not as a server, and the report indicates immediate failure. My problem the vtund does not terminate and complains that it is unable to fork.
