Ubuntu 8.10 - ERROR 22

Asked by Alexandre Faster

I was using dual boot on a Dell machine (Win XP Pro & Ubuntu 8.10). Every thing worked fine with dual boot until I decided to repartition the hard disk (from Windows) to make room for Windows. I (foolishly) repartitioned the disk from Windows. Now I get the following:
Grub loading; please wait...
ERROR 22

I have lost my original Live CD. I do not have the means to make another one. I believe that the live CD would help me solve the problem. If I'm correct, how can I purchase one?

If there may be another solution, please let me know.

Thank you!

Support for Ubuntu 8.10 has already ended 10 years ago!

I suggest that you create a new live DVD with a current Ubuntu release (e.g. Ubuntu 20.04) or create a bootable USB stick with the Ubuntu installer. By booting with one of these in the "Try Ubuntu without installing" mode, you should be able to access the data on the Ubuntu partitions.

see https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
On the bottom of the page you find instructions how to create a DVD or bootable USB stick with the installer (note that a CD is not large enough any more for current releases).

Ubuntu 8.10 was released in 2008 it is no longer available for download, has no security updates.
Currently Ubuntu can be downloaded and put on a Flash Drive and installed.
https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop - 2 core processor - 4 GB memory - 25GB HDD space free - 64 bit
Flavor of Ubuntu -
https://lubuntu.me/downloads/ - Pentium II or larger processor - 512 MB + Memory - 6+ GB HDD space free - 64 bit
Bottom of same page -
18.04.5 Bionic Beaver LTS (LXDE) Desktop 64bit or 32 bit

You can install Balena Etcher on windows to install OS on flash drive. https://www.balena.io/etcher/
