problem after upgrade to 9.04

Asked by mayan

after upgrade to 9.04, although it says failure to fetch some, i can't open my documents file! then i went to recent files and opened one and there's a notice: openoffice crash but that my files are being recovered. but still documents won't open. why has it become so troublesome? i'm beginning to regret that i upgraded at all. it's delaying my work (an understatement, of course).

and now i'm using another computer. my computer won't reboot and it seems to be saying there is something missing, it needs to find. can't even comprehend it, i guess it's for a programmer. it is a disaster

I would reinstall any apps you are having difficulty with

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice.org; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

Do that with each app you are having difficulty with to completely remove it and reinstall it

Most of the outputs are not for programmers and are very readable.

If all else fails you can go for gold with

sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

which will reinstall the metapackage for all the stuff that makes ubuntu, ubuntu (but not the kernel etc)

This should right you but will take a lot longer.

the thing is, my computer won't reboot so i can't possible remove or
reinstall anything. when my computer opens, it shows a smaller icon of
ubuntu which to me means it's now a different version from the one i have
before, then it will show the one i said before: missing blahblah i can't
comprehend. the next time i tried, after showing the ubuntu icon the screen
just goes blank. does this mean i should be resigned to losing everything i
had in my computer? can they still be recovered?

Why do you not have a backup if your data is important to you?

You can press ESC before grub loads, select recovery mode then select root with networking. This will give you a single user root console which you can easily copy stuff to LAN / USB and if you browse around, burn a CD.

You can do ANYTHING at CLI that you can do in X (except flash in websites), absolutely anything. so if you can get this boot you can start to remedy stuff. using command line with apt-get etc.

thanks for taking the time to help. honestly i cannot follow through your
instructions; i'm a computer user but not quite computer literate.

a friend reinstalled(partially) the former ubuntu version 8.10 i had and
retrieved all my files. in that sense, my problem is solved.

as to the saga of my 9.04 upgrade, it's to be continued. my friend has asked
for the cd installer of 9.04 and so eventually my computer will be upgraded
to 9.04 but not through the net just like what i did which took several
days. i'm positive the upgrade will eventually become successful.

If this is considered as solved please mark it as such.

If 8.10 works for you, why change it has been my mantra on #freenode for month now.
