bluetooth device timeout

when using a bluetooth keyboard, after a period of inactivity, the bluetooth device handler disconnects. Only after a key is pressed does the system reconnect, but that first character is lost. It is very inconvenient to have to check that the bluetooth is active before I type something.

I found a switch in Settings -> Power -> Power Saving -> "Bluetooth can be turned off to save power.", but when I turn that off, the bluetooth is totally turned off, so that didn't work.

Is there a configuration parameter which I can set which will deactivate that timeout?
