internal webcam not connected, external monitors worked for a bit and now do not appear under displays when plugged in, streaming video/audio permissions contstantly changing

Asked by Blake Pollard

Running 20.04 and a lenovo thinkpad x1 extreme 2nd gen
Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2)
NVIDIA gtx 1650

Internal webcam listed as disconnected
external monitors worked via thunderbolt, but stopped being recognized when plugged in, do not appear under displays

when using usb video conferencing hardware like usb camera or OWL office, those sources will intermittently disappear/disconnect both for audio/video

i tried switching from open source to proprietary drivers from NVIDIA to no avail

I upgraded my kernel to 5.8.13 from 4 something and things seem to be working more smoothly.
