Upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 fails due to non-existing PPA server

Asked by vitaliy

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 from Ubuntu 18.04.5.

After apt update & apt upgrade, I'm trying to
do-release-upgrade

I get the following error:
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
    This was likely caused by:
Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
    try the upgrade again.

I see that I've previously installed ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test and ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi that cause the issue.
So I try to purge them, but get the following error:
root@ubuntu:~# ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test
Updating packages lists
E: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/hanipouspilot/rtlwifi/ubuntu/dists/bionic/InRelease 403 Forbidden [IP: 91.189.95.83 80]
E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/hanipouspilot/rtlwifi/ubuntu bionic InRelease' is not signed.
Warning: apt-get update failed for some reason
root@ubuntu:~# ppa-purge ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi

E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/hanipouspilot/rtlwifi/ubuntu bionic InRelease' is not signed.
Warning: apt-get update failed for some reason

Looks like the purge is failing as the server is no longer available?
How can I remove the packages manually?

Not a problem of the launchpad services, but an Ubuntu problem. Relocating the question accordingly.

Ok, a bit strange, but let's try to go forward.

1. There seems not to be any package from ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi on your system any more, and also the PPA is already disabled (no error on apt update).

2. There are some packages from ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test but they should (at least in my opinion) not block the release upgrade.

I suggest hat you try the release upgrade again.
If it fails the same way, then you should remove ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test with the ppa-purge tool. In my opinion ppa-purge should now work.

OK, this was scary :)

The upgrade failed again, so I did ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test, which succeeded.
However, this broke apt, after this operation apt refused to do anything, failed with the following error message:
error while loading shared library libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Unwisely rebooted the machine, and Ubuntu got stuck in a boot loop!
From recovery console I copied the file back from a different machine.
Ubuntu now boots, everything back to normal, however I still cannot upgrade :)

What's now the last lines of apt.log? Still complaining about mutter, gsettings-desktop-schemas and gnome-settings-daemon-common?

This seems to be a frequent problem nowadays, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bugs?orderby=-id&start=0

Several bug reports with similar log files.

I have no idea about the root cause and how to correct it. HI hope that the developers will pick that up soon.

Looks like similar issues,
Maybe I should indeed wait for a newer version to upgrade? what do you think?

OK, Thanks Manfred & Bernard,
I'll wait for the bugs to be resolved.

BTW, If I flush ununtu 20 on a USB stick, and try to upgrade with it, do you expect it to work?

Several years ago (I think up to Ubuntu 12.04) there was an "alternate" CD available that offered the possibility to do an in-place upgrade. Nowadays that is not possible any more. You now have to do a complete new installation, creating a backup of your private files first for restoring afterwards.

I guess you better wait for a fix.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask vitaliy for more information if necessary.
