Touchpad not working Spectre 360 convertible

Asked by cindy

Touchpad doesn't work on Spectre 360 convertible laptop. I had the same problem with Linux Mint, and after troubleshooting for hours, I finally gave up in frustration and erased Linux Mint and installed Ubuntu. The problem is better in that the touchpad is totally disabled rather than erratic and inconsistent, but I would like to be able to use it. The touchscreen works perfectly, but I don't need it, so if it's a matter of having too many input devices, it's the touchscreen I'd just as soon do without.

Input devices includes M325 - I haven't used that device since erasing Mint and installing Unbuntu. Perhaps it's not starting from scratch as I had hoped?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Oh, and I should add that the touchpad doesn't show up under settings--> Mouse & Touchpad. TIA.

Mint is based on Ubuntu so you aren't really trying very much "different" at all by switching from Mint to Ubuntu.

@ationparsnip - I did a clean install from a different source, so you know, there is that.

Thank you for the link. It sounds promising in that it makes alot of sense . Sorry to be such but would you please tell me where I can get more info on "save this file to root" so that the commands get executed? TIA.

Saving the file as root isn't a thing. You will need to save the file as any user and make sure root has ownership or access etc. The user downloading the file doesn't really matter

I appreciate your help and don't want to waste your time asking what you would consider really dumb questions, so could you please direct me to resource that would explain to me the part of the instructions that says "Save this file as root " (see last line copied/pasted below)

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ish.conf

blacklist hid_sensor_rotation
blacklist hid_sensor_incl_3d
blacklist hid_sensor_magn_3d
blacklist hid_sensor_gyro_3d
blacklist hid_sensor_accel_3d
blacklist hid_sensor_trigger
blacklist hid_sensor_iio_common
blacklist industrialio_triggered_buffer
blacklist industrialio
blacklist hid_sensor_custom
blacklist hid_sensor_hub
blacklist intel_ishtp_loader
blacklist intel_ishtp_hid
blacklist intel_ish_ipc
blacklist cros_ec_ishtp
blacklist intel_ishtp

Save this file as root and run sudo update-initramfs -u then reboot

Ah OK, run:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ish.conf

Paste the contents into the file. Save it and reboot to test. If you get issues, run:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ish.conf

Then reboot again

Thank you very much! It didn't work, but it's one more thing to have tried. I'm starting to think it's not a linux thing - it's just broken. Appreciate your time.

OMG, it's working. I applied the fix and rebooted. The cursor started floating around the page on its own (not good) and still the touchpad wasn't controlling anything. Turned off the laptop, came back 7 hours later and 1) it's perfect - it's working like a dream, and 2) when I go to "settings", the touchpad is showing up as a device under "mouse & touchpad".

Thanks so much for your help. I am thrilled. I've been tackling this issue on and off for months, I can barely believe my misery is over. Better than Christmas. Thank you.

I reinstalled windows and had the same problem. Disabling the stylus/pen works for alot of people, and it seemed to help, but not totally fix the problem. Also, I do not have the issue at all in tablet mode.
