Which version of Ubuntu did you install? The server version (has only the GUI mode) or the desktop version (with graphical desktop)?

What was the name of the *.iso file that you have used for installing?

If you log in to on the GUI screen and execute the command

dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop

does it (after a number of header lines) show the text 'ii ubuntu desktop' or not?

Wow. I guess I installed the incorrect one. I installed Ubuntu server instead of desktop.

The file name I downloaded is ubuntu-20.04.1-live-server-amd64.iso

Ok, no problem.

Log in to the console mode with your username and password and issue the command

sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop

This will (if you have internet connection) install the programs for a graphical desktop.

In case that this fails, you can also restart from scratch with a download of the desktop iso file from
https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Can you help with this problem?
