no RED in video file display

Asked by Ed Stone

No RED when running video files.

I built a PC running Ubuntu 8.10 on the following:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor
EVGA 01G-P3-N959-TR GeForce 9500 GT video card (DVI out)
G.SKILL 4GB DR2 1066 RAM
WD Caviar Black WD5001AALS SATA HD
Samsung 2233SW monitor

Everything was OK for a while, video files played in full color, until I tried to play an encrypted DVD. Per the official documentation I loaded additional packages (libdvdnav4, libdvdread3 and gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly) and ran the following "sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh". The recommended NVIDIA 180 hardware driver is activated.

Suddenly the RED was no longer present when playing any video format (mpg, etc.), except for streaming video using the ANT toolbar in Firefox!

All other color renditions are OK (photos, web pages etc.), including screen shots of videos playing in only BLUE and GREEN.

I tries reloading the packages without sucess.

If you're using the proprietary, unsupported driver from nvidia then the open source community can't help you.

Please consider trading your card for a card with an open source driver.

I am using the drivers from Ubuntu, I assumed they were supported. The card isn't the problem as it works fine on still pictures and streaming video via ANT. (And it worked fine till I tried to play a DVD.)

This shows that the proprietary module is being used. The free module is
called 'nv'. This means that any bug reports and any questions should be
directed at the appropriate official nvidia channel. While you're at it
please ask them to open source their driver. There surely are also
non-official support forums. Good luck.

Many blessings.

To Ed Stone,
I seem to have the same problem and like to know how your problem was solved. Maybe a small pointer here?
Thanks a lot,
Paul
