a good test from the phoronix benchmark list

Asked by emilschwab

I insalled phoronix test suite and I typed in Terminal a command that gave me a list of possible tests.

Question: Which one is a good test for Ubuntu 9.04 (installed under Windows XP), which could fully test the parts of my PC? (I chose one, randomly, something about generating molecules, typed another command, it started, but I got lots of warnings).

Hello,

On my PC, Windows XP was installed. Two partitions, C and F. I installed Ubuntu 8.10 with Wubi installer, on partition F. I didn't do anything, I followed Wubi's instructions. After that, I updated my Ubuntu 8.10, 292 updates. Again, I didn't do anything. Ubuntu offered me the updates and I approved. After that, Ubuntu asked me if I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 and I approved. It installed by itself, again.

Now, at booting, I can choose Windows XP or Ubuntu (9.04). That's it.

Emil

I think that the phoronix forums would be a good place to ask this question.

Perhaps, but I thought Ubuntu 9.04 forums should know better how to test their system!! When a man has to go on a long journey he has to see if he is ok, healthy, all of his body parts working, then he has to take his accessories, like clothes and stuff, and then he goes. My intention was to buy a laptop and install on it a version of Ubuntu which is and will be supported and which FULLY works!!!! In order to do this I have 1) to install the bloody Ubuntu  2) To test each part of the laptop myself, wathching a movie, playing a game, wireless etc, a preliminary testing. System testing and monitoring could also be used here, if they work. (At my PC, System Testing doesn't work...)  3) To use a serious benchmark suite which should fully and totally test the system. 4) And finally, to find those hidden bugs of which I heard on this forum, like overheated laptops, fans not working or working permanently, HDD load cycles etc

So, what could I say more, you shouldn't have bothered to answer...

Dear emilschwab,

1. Run the live cd and go to system -> management -> System Testing.
That's the very minimal.

2. I'd try the phoronix-test-suite package that's in the repository.
It's not 1.8, but 1.6. If you think it's not new enough to be thorough
enough, try 18. Remember, it's not a good idea usually to install
software not from Ubuntu packages because then it is "outside" the
system's package management. About the test profiles - again, please see
the phoronix testing suite forums for that.

3. After strainous test have ran for a while, please check the system's
fan, temprature and so on.

4. Check leds, WiFi and card reader and other peripherals.

5. See the Log File Viewer for errors. Especially dmesg.

This sounds thorough to me.

Many blessings.

Oh, and test Hibernate and Suspend!

And BTW better get one with a Radeon HD or a rather new Intel graphics chip.

Thank you for the more thorough answer.

If you are still so kind to explain me:

 1) > I'd try the phoronix-test-suite package that's in the repository. What and where is is the repository ?

 2) How can I check the status of all the fans of my PC (desktop) ?

 3) How can I check the temperature of each part of my PC?

 4) What do you mean by "and so on" ?

 5) What are leds and how can I check them?

 6) What is WiFi and how can I check it?

 7) How can I check card reader?

 8) Where is Log File Viewer?

 9) What is dmesg?

 Thanks.

 Emil

Ok, forgive my ignorance. I am going to read and experiment all of 1-9. Sincerely yours. Emil.
