[DELL XPS13] Ubuntu 18.04 LTS X-server crash when memory usage peaks

Asked by Lorenzo Moriondo

The OS is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as provided by Dell factory installation.

dmesg | grep BIOS
Hardware name: Dell Inc. XPS 13 9300/077Y9N, BIOS 1.0.11 05/08/2020

uname -a
    Linux laptop-dev 5.0.0-1063-oem-osp1 #68-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 26 19:44:17 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When system starts slowing down and eventually freeze with CPU venting spinning up, this is the syslog after X-server session crashes and user logged on afterwards:

cat /var/log/syslog | grep Fail

Have you tried a newer kernel?

yes as far as I know both BIOS and kernel updates are provided automatically via firmware updates and from Dell's PPA. See respective versions at the top of the question.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Lorenzo Moriondo for more information if necessary.
