Installed Xubuntu 9.04 and no sound

Hi I have a Compaq EVO N610c laptop. I had Ubuntu 8.100 on it and the sound worked fine. I then decided to install Xubuntu 9.04 and now I don't have any sound. I does show a speaker icon but it is a light gray compared to the other icons. Thanks

Sound works, but volume controls on laptop don't since installing Xubuntu. Thanks

i just installed xubuntu 10.10 to a inte celeron 2.4 ghz 30gb internal harddrive system by toshiba satellite 1135-s1553 1 gb ram memory and there is no sound when playing youtube or any other internet based video file. what do i do?. i hace already gone to the alsa mixer and activated all the speaker systems etc and increased their volume a selected inline as a switch and iec958. what do i do next?
