Accessing Windows NTFS drives - permissions

Asked by lovephyst

I have an extra NTFS formatted drive that I use in conjunction with windows xp. I can read from the drive, but options to create new folders are greyed out. Also, if I try to copy a file over to the drive I get the error 'Error while copying to "/media/sdb1...ils/Broken". You do not have permissions to write to this folder.'

How do i permanently give myself (and other users) permissions to use this drive?

I know this has probably been asked before but I can't seem to get the keywords right... after reading through the forums I believe this somehow uses the 'sudo' command (if I knew what that was) - sorry very new to Ubuntu 7.04.

TIA

You can use ntfs-3g.
Mind youthat this is still an experimental package, so you may experience some problems.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountingWindowsPartitions/ThirdPartyNTFS3G

If it can reassure you, I'm happily using it since 7.04 is out.

I have seen NTFS3G in previous forums, but I couldn't get it to work. I tried 'NTFS Configuration Tool', which solved my problem.
Thanks.

i'm still having major issues with
(1) playing ANY kind of dvd's and
(2) accessing a windows formatted drive ( Samsung 300 gig T-drive). T is
like the C drive.. just the letter I designated to it.

the bottom line with dvd's is they simply dont play.

the T drive which had over 20 gigs of data (documents, video, music,
etc) was formatted in NTFS... now ubuntu says its formatted in
reiserfs... does that mean my data is gone... how can i access it?
