Firefox crash on 16.04 Xenial

Asked by Mic Sparrow on 2020-06-27

Since the last Firefox update to the 78 build 2 release candidate from Mozilla Security Team PPA, the browser has become unusable.
Every attempt to launch the program ends in a crash message.

Firefix build: 78.0+build2-0ubuntu0.16.04.1
OS: Lubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus

Is this a worldwide problem? As I recall such situation in the past.

I suggest you contact the PPA maintainer to report the issue. It's their PPA and they manage their own packages for their own needs

Are you talking about https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ubuntu/ppa ?

Then read the information on that page:

"Staging PPA for Mozilla and other browser-related security updates. Unless you are testing updates, you should NOT install packages from this PPA."
"For questions and bugs with software in this PPA please contact Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team."

What was your intention when adding that PPA?

I'm betting this didn't get read....

Mic Sparrow (sparrow93) said : #4

actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666) this got read.
I contacted the developer about this bug.

Then why ask the question in the first place if you read it....?

Mic Sparrow (sparrow93) said : #6

Is this now a crime to ask?

Mic Sparrow (sparrow93) said : #7

What is more the dev doesn't have the Q&A section on their PPA Launchpad website.

Not a crime. Just that the PPA clearly states to contact the security team, so why make the question when the instruction (which you say you read) clearly say to contact them...

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security

Top right has a button that says "Contact this teams admins". Use that.

Alternatively (my recommendation) uninstall Firefox, remove the PPA then install the version from the Ubuntu repositories. You'll have to fewer issues

"Is this now a crime to ask?"

No of course it is not a crime, but it's useless if you ask at the wrong address.

Mic Sparrow (sparrow93) said : #12

I did contact them through the site form.
Thanks for all answers and sorry for the trouble.

Actually Firefox build: 78.0+build2-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 is a new build in progress. Suggestion is to wait for the new current Firefox through your updates.
As previously mentioned testing occurs before the new release. The current Firefox is 77.
Respectfully observe our code of conduct. Have a wonderful day.

Today is the new release for Firefox 78 you should receive thru your regular updates.
