Partial upgrade failure in Ubuntu 20.04. Cannot install Synaptic as installation contains 'too many errors'.

Asked by M. Kaye on 2020-06-19

Attempts to install partial upgrade in Ubuntu 20.04 repeats failure due to 'too many errors'. Cannot install 'linux-image-5.4.0-38 or 5.4.0-37 generic packages due to 'installation subprocess returned error exit status 1'. Also: (update grub returned an error: exit status 1). (Update grub returned an error: usr/bin/dpkg. /usb./sbin/gryb-probe: error: failed to get canonical path 'rpool/ROOT/ubuntu_on 4uwv. How do I attempt to fix this problem? I cannot access a command line terminal.

Why? What happens if you try?
