Ubuntu 20 has no way of using Wayland

Asked by Lucas Zanella

Up to Ubuntu 19, I'd simply switch to Wayland on the gear icon on the login screen. On Ubuntu this option wont appear anymore. I tried the lots of tutorials I found on google about editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and commenting WaylandEnable=false but it was already commented. Anyways I tried all combinations of WaylandEnable=false, WaylandEnable=true and with WaylandEnable commented out, but the gear icon wont appear, and also

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

prints

x11

always

I already asked on Ask Ubuntu and even setted a bounty https://askubuntu.com/questions/1212810/how-to-activate-wayland-before-arriving-at-login-screen but no one seems to know

Do you mean Ubuntu 20.04 or 20.10? There is no "Ubuntu 20". It doesn't exist

It's 20.04

I did a fresh install (minimal desktop install) just like I did before for ubuntu 19.something, which presented me the Wayland/Non Wayland gear icon on login screen.

This one simply does not.

I also tried installing gnome-wayland (something like that) which was indeed missing. The gear icon appeared but now I can only pick between "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu on XOrg", there's no Wayland. "Ubuntu" is also not wayland because echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE gives x11

"Ubuntu 19" did and does not exist either. Are you talking about Ubutnu 19.04 or Ubuntu 19.10?
Please see https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle for the release numbering standards in Ubuntu.

Do you see a cog wheel during login on the bottom right corner as shown on https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-20-04-desktop ?

It was Ubuntu 19.10

No, I did not see this. This is what I call the gear icon. On Ubuntu 19.10 I've seen it, simply clicked, switched to Wayland and my GPU worked, no back screens/no signals when on Wayland.

On Ubuntu 20.04, however, it wont appear. When I installes gnome-session-wayland it appears but as I said, it only let me choose between Ubuntu and Ubuntu on XOrg, the first one (Ubuntu) not being Wayland but x11 when I do echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

Yes, I tried commenting, uncommenting, and even letting WaylandEnable=true. In each of these tries, I restarted the gdm and also rebooted, but the icon wont appear. I even tried another kernel.

You should see the cog wheel when logging in - after clicking on your username, before entering the password.
Do you see it?
Which options do you see?

Revision history for this message
Lucas Zanella (lucaszanella) said :

I don't see it. Tried multiple times but it wont show.
Then I tried editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as said here https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-20-04-desktop but it also wont make it appear

I also tried installing gnome-session-wayland. This makes the "Ubuntu on XOrg" appear on the cog, along with "Ubuntu", but no Wayland option appears. When I log into "Ubuntu", echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE still says x11.

On Ubuntu 19.10 the cog simply appeared right on the first boot after installation

gnome-session-wayland cannot to anything, because it is just a transitional package having dependencies but no contents on its own.

I am sorry, but I do not have any idea what there is wrong on your system.
On my system it is exactly as shown on https://linuxconfig.org/images/01-how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-20-04-desktop.png

Hi Kai. No, the reason im struggling with this is that I dont want to use proprietary drivers, so they're disabled.

On Ubuntu 19.10 Wayland worked simply by switching on the login gear icon (no proprietary drivers also). On Ubuntu 20 I can't do it.

It's worth noticing that for my GTX 1660 I've found a way to boot into the desktop but with several problems. When it reaches the login screen, it's all back. But if I press enter and type the password and press enther, I can use the desktop, but not change resolution, it gets all black again. Also if I logout everything goes black and I have to reboot.

On GT 750 I boot into a all purple screen but the same technique of typing password will give me a black screen.

However I guess that simply activating Wayland would solve all of this as it did on Ubuntu 19.

Do anyone knows anything more I can try?

What about ouveau driver. Am I using it or not?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Lucas Zanella for more information if necessary.
