Is anyone familiar with this problem?

The error message

"Alert /dev/disk/by uuid/c8815cb 6-c206-49208b does not exist dropping to a shell"

means that the system can not find the hard disk. Each partition of the hard disk has a UUID to identify
itself. One reason for this would be a bad disk, or removing the disk. But it does not have to be that.
The UUID will also change when the partition is reformatted.

This may not be the entire problem - but it is certainly a clue.

Try burning an ubuntu installation CD. You may have one already, if so - good.
Boot it and then instead of installing try to use it to mount your existing hard drive.

There may be a way to repair but it is too much to try to explain over this channel. Possibly what
you might want to do is find a way to copy your data and files off and then reinstall.

If thats beyond what you know, then better find a friend.

Or maybe someone else here can help.... but my time is up.

Good luck!

Does the CD have to be the same Version I installed? Because I only have 9.04 version on cd not 8.10 version. Also I installed the 8.10 version by other directions and not by the cd. Thanks!

Any live CD can be used to open the drive if it is working but you need to study how to do it with "mount" command from a terminal.

I think KNOPPIX mounts all the drives automatically. You might try using a KNOPPIX CD.
