snap failing with home directory being a symlink

Asked by Peter Teuben

I happen to use a home directory which is a symlink to my home directory on another partition.
Somehow this causes snap applications to fail, claiming that it cannot create the user data directory. E.g.
in my case it claims /home/teuben/snap/yakyak/65: Not a directory

I can manually execute the snap by using a full path /snap/yakyak/65/yakyak/yakyak

This is a known restriction.

Bug #1620771 suggests workarounds e.g. comments #5 and #6
