Asked by Eduard Drenth

on 2004 I cannot anymore use the enter key to open/run a shortcut on the desktop. In 1804 I could.

Can this feature be restored?

Desktop shortcuts have been removed in Ubuntu 20.04. What shortcuts are you using? If you run:

ls ~/Desktop

Are the files in the ".desktop" format?

Yes: intellij.desktop for example

Now that I think of it, perhaps I ask the wrong question. What leads me to asking it is that the dock (with the favorites) has this nice feature to add a running program to it (add to favorites). But that doesn't work for intellij and a lot of other java programs.

My workaround was to add a .desktop file to my desktop and than do "show desktop", arrow movnig to the shortcut and than <enter>.

I can probably get a launcher for intellij in the favorites with the help of google, dconf, some command line and the like, but I think it would be good if "add to favorites" simply always works for running programs, also for intellij and other (java) programs, no matter how these programs are started.

Nobody else wants keyboard navigation on the desktop or always working "add to favorites"?
