Upgrade an Edgy install using the Desktop / Live CD

Asked by Karthik

Could somebody please direct me to a guide that allows a user to upgrade an Edgy installation to Feisty using the Desktop / Live CD (not the alternate CD)?

The following link does _not_ contain the information I am looking for and deals only with network upgrades and alternate CD upgrades:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades

If there is no GUI based upgrade tool available for the Desktop CD, could I perhaps add the CD as an APT repository and use it in tandem with the network install?

Thanks :)

Thanks for your question.

The Live-CD does not have the functionality included to do an upgrade. You need to use the alternate CD if you want to do an upgrade via CD. Otherwise you can always do an upgrade via update manager which loads all the necessary files from the network.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Ralph. Is it possible to perhaps set up the CD as a local repository to minimise the download time?

I expect it is possible if you use the CD with the Synaptic Package Manager

Er, no it wont, definitely not.

The live cd doesn't contain a repository in the same way the alternate CD does. It cannot be used for in-place upgrades, only reinstalls.

Thanks Alan. I have an acquaintance stuck in rural India (with an appropriately dodgy dial-up connection) who is looking to upgrade. He ordered and received the free CD pack, but was unable to upgrade.

Perhaps a suitable notice can be placed on the upgrade page and the Ship-It page? And if possible, the alternate CD could be made available as a Ship-it option, perhaps with the 3CD pack.

Thanks again.

Maybe you could use apt-mirror to create a local repository, then burn it onto DVD for your friend?

I downloaded the alternate CD and mailed it to him instead. Thanks again all.
