LateX in default Ubuntu 20.04 installation

Asked by Petr Schuchmann

Hi,

I'm trying to find out why LateX is part of default Ubuntu installation (20.04, proposal). We used LateX on one project so I know, how huge this bundle is. I tried apt-get purge texlive-base to see what packages are affected:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  fonts-lmodern libsgmls-perl lmodern preview-latex-style sgmlspl teckit
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  docbook-utils* jadetex* texlive-base* texlive-fonts-recommended* texlive-formats-extra* texlive-htmlxml* texlive-latex-base* texlive-latex-extra* texlive-latex-recommended* texlive-latex-recommended-doc*
  texlive-pictures* texlive-pictures-doc* texlive-plain-generic* texlive-xetex* tipa*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 15 to remove and 309 not upgraded.
After this operation, 544 MB disk space will be freed.

You can see: 544MB. Is there any reason to install all of these packages by default? I can image that some packages are needed to render OpenType/postscript fonts, but 544MB?

Thank you

If you want to explore this, install a VM and take a snapshot/checkpoint. You can then remove the packages and see what works / doesn't work.

If you feel it's an oversight then please report a bug
