after upgrade xUbuntu-16.04 to xUbuntu-18.04 (Experia-Box v10 gives) no internet

Asked by Wim

after upgrade xUbuntu-16.04 to xUbuntu-18.04 (Experia-Box v10) gives no internet

( (edit 2020-mar-06 : probably not ExperiaBox-item but upgrade-item) )

PC: Packard Bell imedia S1800
motherboard: Veriton M275
nic: NetXtreme BCM57760 Gigabit (Broadcomm 1 Gbit/s) network interface
CAT5-cable-connected to modem

Modem: Experia-Box v10 (ZTE H369A)

PC running xubuntu-16.04 updated till februari 2020.
Ubuntu Update-Manager downloads and upgraded the PC from 16.04 to 18.04
After reboot PC running 18.04 has no internet connection.

Ping to modem (and external IP-address):... OK
Ping to any external IP-success:... fails
as well at connection 100 Mbit/s as 1000 Mbit/s

tested several things:
* cat5-cable at different modem ports 1, 2, 3 gives same fail
* disconnect, modem reset and wait 20 min.s, re-connect gives same fail
* Toshiba laptop (also running xUbuntu-18.04 bionic) at SAME CAT5-cable can connect to internet

* change negotiation in Network Manager (xUbuntu) to 100, 1000 and Auto at the PC
   gives same fails

* PC can log in to Experia-Box, so (cable-)connection between modem and PC is OK
* PC pings successful to internal and external IP4-address of the Experia-Box
* all pings to external IP addresses fails

suggestions are welcome,
thanks in advance !

# -- update at febr. 28

The PC is moved to an other location, and is now (wired) connected to a FritzBox modem.
Result: the PC now can PING every internet4-address given as NUMBERS (e.g. 91.189.88.149 or 91.189.91.44).
The PC still cannot find any internet address given as name (e.g. ubuntu.com or archive.ubuntu.com).

Probably all my testing over the last week destroyed the use of DNS-servers at all internet access, so even
   sudo apt-get check
works only if these lines are added in the file /etc/hosts:
  91.189.88.149 archive.ubuntu.com
  91.189.88.162 security.ubuntu.com

Also the DNS-servers IP4-addresnumbers were added in the NetworkManager-icon in:
  + modify connections
  + wired connection-1
  + IP 4 settings
+ DNS-servers as 123.123.123.123 separated with comma and space

Any suggestion about the restoring of reading the DNS-servers?

Many thanks for your help.

Can you ping the router's internal IP?
Can you ping 8.8.8.8?
Can you ping bbc.co.uk and get a resolution to an IP?
Do systems on the same connection get web access OK?

Andrew,

i can ping as well the internal as the external IP from modem (router)

PC on cable can NOT ping to any other IP ( so 8.8.8.8 and bbc.co.uk fails )
LapTop on the same cable CAN ping everything on the internet

PC gets DHCP address ending on xxx.xxx.2.8
laptop gets DHCP address ending on xxx.xxx.2.5

Connection this morning running 16.04 was OK, so
i assume 18.04 does 'something' with the NetXtreme BCM57760 Gigabit network card that is not accepted by the Experia-Box
( a ZTE H369A fibre modem from Dutch provider KPN )

Do you have a gateway IP set for the interface?

Andrew,

nothing was SET by me...
i let NetWorkManager do the Wired-Connection-Setting.

I am not at the location of the PC,
tomorrow i will look at the settings....

I also will try to set some DNS-servers manually in the Wired-Connection settings....

Results will be posted here;
thanks for your reactions here!

eth0 ( my-mac-address )
MTU automatic
wake on LAN : all empty
link-negotiate : discard
802.1x-security : all empty
DCB : empty
proxy : methode none
IPv4-settings : automatic & required ( no DNS-servers given )
IPv6-settings : automatic & extentions-OFF & stable-privacy

RESULT:

# -- 2020 march : only ROOT-partition fresh installed

On a new location the root partition was reinstalled using an Xubuntu-usb-stick 18.04.3 LTS i586 Desktop.
The HOME-partition was NOT mounted during this process.
All went conform expectations.
Created the same groups and users (still all on the ROOT-partition), using the 'old' GID and UID.
/etc/fstab modified so that the 'old' HOME partition also is going to be mounted on /home/.
Everything under /home/ on the ROOT-partition was removed.
After reboot upgraded Xubuntu.
PC located on its old location (cat5-wired on the ExperiaBox modem).

Everything seems to work fine now.

Result:
PC-owner can work on the PC.
But no further investigation on the problem can be done here.
So: case closed.

Let's keep enjoying linux !
