Update manager opens automatically at times in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by borncrusader

The Update manager opens automatically when I'm using other applications. I have even tried disabling the update manager and yet it starts automatically, (minimized) at times.

That is the new default behavior for Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).

It appears you can back to the default behavior by opening a terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and typing:

gconftool -s –type bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch false

Yes and I simply don't understand why it was made default. It annoys the hell out of me and every other user I've met. I can for example have a full screen game open and suddenly lose all input because the update manager window pop-ed up in the background. The game still has control of the screen, so the game seems to be locked up, even though it isn't.

The default behavior should be changed back for 9.10. This is truly a paper-cut (see http://blog.davebsd.com/2009/06/10/one-hundred-paper-cuts/)

This horribly annoying behaviour should be removed for 9.10, imho. What purpose does it serve? And it starts minimized, but flashing in an annoying manner. I don't understand. Is it minimized so as not to attract attention to itself? Then why is it flashing? So to bring up the window, it needs one click(in the window list). In the previous behaviour, it was an icon in the taskbar and notified you when there were updates available. It took 1 click to bring up the window, exactly the same number of clicks as the new behaviour. So I don't see what advantages there are in the new update manager. Again, I would like to see the previous behaviour as default in the next release.
