Static IP setting disables Internet on VBox Ubuntu 18.04.3

Asked by Wahid Hussain Syed

Hi,

I've a Oracle VirtualBox installed on my windows 7 laptop. I've created 3 VMs on the VBox with Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, Release 18.04 on it.

As per my requirement, I need to make sure my 3 VMs communicate with each other. To do so, I changed the IPs to Static IP under /etc/netplan/01-network-manager-all.yaml and applied the settings "netplan apply" and then the internet disappears. Nothing works out.

Could you please provide the settings for the VM to VM communication. And BTW, I've set NATNetwork as the Network setting for the VirtualBox and using the same for the VMs too.

Thank You!
Syed.

How did you set your IP? Can you ping the default gateway? Can you ping 8.8.8.8? Can you telnet to port 53 on 8.8.8.8? If you have a different DNS server then try that too. Can you ping/dig names and get a resolution?

Hi,

I cannot ping 8.8.8.8. I cannot telnet port 53.

Do you have iptables / ufw configured on the system? If so then are you allowing port 53 out and in for DNS

What do you want:
VM to Internet communication
VM to VM communication only
or both?

To me this seems to be a problem related to the settings inside Oracle VirtualBox and not an Ubuntu problem.

Have you searched for instructions on the web, e.g.
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch06.html
https://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/Network_Configuration_in_VirtualBox

A probably better place for your question is

Can you help with this problem?
